The Agony .... the organizers for the Big Four show offer a light breakfast for the artists and they did not include coffee. The booth fee is 425.00 and no coffee? The coffee vender where you could buy a cup for 2.00 ran out of coffee and this was before the show even started. Plus they didn’t have half n half only 2% milk, yuck. Over 200 artists and other venders totaled 375. The weather was great thank goodness easy load in and easy load out. Some artists zipped up their tent and left for the day on Saturday because of low attendance and sluggish sales. “If I win the lottery I would love to buy that piece” we heard that a lot. Zero sales on Saturday. Sunday had better attendance the people are very friendly, but the money didn’t flow. The wind must have shifted because a fine dust was floating over everything that’s not good. We did have some interest in two paintings but nothing happened. Time to pack up so we did and then went to dinner. Feeling deflated pulling into the B&B we get a phone call... we want to purchase, will you deliver in the morning? ......The ecstasy......yay! And get this, these buyers have a place in Delray Beach. We go all the way to Louisville small world. Next stop home, my own bed, I can’t wait.

Shadyside PA on Walnut street was an OK show for us. It was well attended and the weather was beautiful! The agony... 3:30 am set up on Saturday which ran until 7pm, ugh! The pizza was excellent and so was the water. We stayed at the Shadyside Inn 2 blocks from the show. That place was great. Acorn restaurant and Mercurios I highly recommend. The jury is still out on whether we would attend again. WestHampton....the agony, army showers. We glamped in a camper in someone’s back yard in Center Moriches. 80 bucks a night not bad for the Hamptons. Actually we had a lot of fun the weather was stunning, cool nights and not so hot days. The way the light hits at that time a year is sparkling. We did pretty good there. Future orders are highly likely.
Set up was super easy, pull right up to your space and unload. Easy Peasy. Then parking was feet away from that. We took the ferry from New London to Orient Pt and drove in the back way. Light traffic all the way. Get this our ferry boat was supposed to be the Mary Ellen but we arrived 2 hours early. Fortunately they had room for us on another boat so we took that. Then, we are driving to the glamper and we pass a road named Mary Ellen. Later, after some sales on Saturday and nibbles all day on Sunday, ten minutes before tear down, our whale, the big fish and guess what? Her name, Mary Ellen, the ecstasy! The ecstasy... we sold both days and it was raining! Frisco is a beautiful town. Oddly enough, we sold to a family that didn’t even know an Art Festival was happening. They have been looking for Art for three years. Two of our 60x40’s were purchased by them. It rained most of the weekend, but around 3pm on Sunday the sun came out and dried up everything. Thank goodness we didn’t have to pack up wet. On our travels from Beaver Creek to Frisco we learned our house was struck by lightening. It blew out the four transformer things in the meter box. 1600.00 later our electricity was back on. Thanks to Raphael Simon.
oh did I tell you the transmission fluid was burning off the tailpipe? The mountains are ruff on an art packed vehicle. Nobody tells you to rest your car, well here it is, rest your car. Fortunately the transmission is A, OK. However after our first leg leaving Frisco in Bowie Texas our battery light came on...Ugh. We stopped at a Ford Dealership, it was the alternator 400 dollars later and 2 1/2 hours we were back on the road. We did meet some very interesting people, Mary a former truck driver, use to haul grain. She drove us to the Golden Chicken to get lunch. Texas Hospitality. I have to say I had the best chicken salad sandwich of my life! Then there was Brian he reads Ora’s apparently mine is green. He said he woke up in a morgue, on a slab yes a morgue, in the box, the silver door, a refrigerator, a morgue. He claimed he has died twice. All in all we had a great time. We handled our tribulations with poise and dignity. BTW I have never seen more land in my entire life, New Mexico’s colors are awesome! Reverse paintings and two sculpture pieces the agony began. At Beaver Creek the turn out was low, for us it was not a buying crowd. After driving 32 hours to get here our hopes were high. Maybe we should have been high. The altitude affected me, I felt like I was gonna fall over any minute. I also felt like I could cry any minute. We didn’t sell anything! Does our work suck? Maybe we should have brought something else... a lot of money in Beaver Creek, but not for us. Many other artists said Sunday was the buying day, well, none of our be backs came back and Sunday was worse than Saturday. To top it all off It started to rain and we had to pack it all up wet...yuck. Moral of the story... sell in your own backyard....I am a sea level gal.
Heading to Asheville NC for the Pack Square Art Show. As we enter Georgia the weather is not looking good.... Bolts of lightening, like bombs bursting in air. Traffic is moving but slow. Seems like night out here. The problem with Florida/ Georgia rain is...the sky, road and rain splash are all the same color. This is the little cottage we stayed in. Really cute smelled like cedar. Pine cottages on a mountain side 7 miles from the show. This show was agony. No buyers for us. We did sell small items only. We didn’t even make our gas money back.
There was a guy selling decal baseball bats for 69.00, seems like he did well. Ughh! Asheville is odd, lots of men wearing women’s clothes, I’m so confused. Everyone we met was from Florida, not one person from Asheville came into our booth. We had a primo booth location, our paintings looked great. Price range 60.00 for 8x10, 500.00 for 60 x10” and 1600.00 for 60x40 all original reverse paintings on Lexan, Professionally framed in white, it was the 3rd annual show maybe that was the problem. We did meet a woman with her daughter and grandmother who were dairy farmers from Tennessee, thick southern accents and delightful people. Dairy farming is hard work. 200 cattle and pigs and grow their own feed. I don’t think we will go back to Asheville, not to sell art anyway. Next stop Avon Colorado... stay tuned. We sold original paintings 60x40” and 60x10. The weather was great the people were friendly and the coffee was delicious. Easy load in and out. We did very well, thank you Manayunk! The only thing, in my opinion was not good for art sales, was at the end of the day on Sunday, a group of hip hoppers did a couple of street shows. Most people scattered.
This piece wrapped and ready to go, sold Saturday before noon. Fantastic, big ticket item! This is a collaborative piece see that bird? I needle felted it. It’s a White Bellied Treepie part of the crow family, endemic to Southern India. Magnus created the female torso and all of that stuff (see photo below) Sunday’s sales were ok a bit shy of my fantasy number. I will definitely do this show again next year. If they will have me. I know exactly what to bring. Our next destination is Manayunk PA in June. We will be presenting our “Dancing Light” series and “By Land” series, reverse paintings on Lexan. stay tuned. Packing up to go home I looked over and saw this! Kinda disturbing.... she’s ok we got her back to the studio and on her pedestal.
5:00 am set up so we got up at 3:45am, very quiet road travel. Convenient unloading but our space had big roots coming out of the ground. Ok, we have adjustable telescopic legs on our pro panels no big deal. Hoisting the tent we had to push push, Duh, tree branches overhead. We never noticed the branches above in the dark. Thank God we were on the shady side of the street. It was a beautiful day with a steady light breeze. Sales were pretty steady, one of the best shows we ever had and we still have Sunday to go. Thank you Customers for your support and thanks Howard Alan!
We will be selling handmade needle felted sandpipers. They are made with organic wool and are poked with different sized needles into submission. This weekend (Memorial Day 2019) begins our adventures in traveling the country exhibiting and hopefully selling our artwork. In this blog, I plan to document our successes, critique the art festivals we participate in and anything else that might be note worthy. Archives
